Heat Pumps can be split firstly into two types - Air Source Heat Pumps (taking energy from the Air) and Ground Source Heat Pumps (taking energy from underground) - Water Source Heat Pumps are also available which work like Ground Source Heat Pumps but take their energy from water such as a pond or lake.
Air Source Heat Pumps can then be split into two further types being Air to Air, moving energy from Outdoor Air to Indoors; or Air to Water, moving energy from Outdoor Air to a Water Cylinder or Heating system.
Air to Air Heat Pumps would usually have both an Outdoor and an Indoor Unit. An Air-to-Water Heat Pump would normally be a single Outdoor Unit connected to a Water Cylinder which can be located either Indoor’s or Outdoor’s.
If you’ve ever felt the heat coming off of the back of your fridge, you’ve experienced the principles of a Heat Pump. Heat Pumps are capable of both Heating & Cooling. Technology continues to move forward but essentially a Heat Pump works like an Air Conditioner cooling system but in reverse.
An Air Conditioner cooling system works as follows:
Indoor unit - a fan blows the hot Indoor room air over a heat-exchanging coil through which cold refrigerant flows. The cold refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air and the cooled air is blown back into the room.
The refrigerant is pumped and circulates between the Indoor Unit and the Outdoor Unit.
Outdoor unit - through compression, the refrigerant gas is heated and its boiling point increases. In the Outdoor unit the obtained heat through compression is released to the outdoor air by means of a fan, which blows the outdoor air over a heat-exchanging coil.
The refrigerant circulates back to the Indoor unit.
Indoor unit - repeats the process as above.
A Heat Pump does this but in reverse!
Air-To-Air Heat Pumps - will both Heat & Cool Indoor Air.
Air-To-Water Heat Pumps - always Heat but also have the capability to Cool depending on the Heating System.
We have an Air-To-Air Heat Pump on LIVE WORKING DISPLAY here in our showroom and are able to demonstrate an Air-To-Water Heat Pump to anybody who is interested in seeing and hearing all about this exciting new, affordable, energy efficient and environmentally friendly technology. If you would like further information or would like to arrange for a free, no obligation, informative demonstration - please contact Bill Fone on 01772 811722.
